Horsham Swimming Club members have won accolades through the Georgina Hope Swimmers Foundation Junior Excellence Program.
Swimming Victoria helps co-ordinate the Swimming Australia JX program, which recognises, rewards and encourages junior swimmers who, through their development of aquatic skills and fitness, achieve a high standard of swimming excellence.
Swimmers aged nine to 16 years who accomplish times set by Swimming Australia at an approved qualifying meet, automatically qualify at gold, silver, bronze or green standard, depending on their best performances during the season.
Horsham Swimming Club JX award winners for the 2016-17 season were: Gold, Jorja Clode, Lily Bolton; bronze, Angus Tickner, Hugo Hopper, Matthew Ough; and Green, Alexandra Salter, Amber McClure, Claudia Lanyon, Iman Shrive, Imogen Worthy, Jacob Matuschka, Maddix Hughes, Montanna Connelly, Sienna Miller and Sienna Walsgott.
Deacon Briggs and Eloise Wills also achieved JX Awards – Deacon at green standard and Eloise at gold standard – in the same season with Ararat Swimming Club. The pair has returned to Horsham Sharks this season. The Horsham Sharks coaching team is now fine-tuning technique and improving the fitness of athletes for the upcoming district season, which starts on Saturday.
The first meet will be at Warracknabeal Memorial Swimming Pool from noon.
On December 2, Stawell Stingrays will host district clubs at Stawell Leisure Complex outdoor pool, with Horsham Sharks to play host at Horsham Aquatic Centre outdoor pool on December 9.
Warracknabeal will host the final meet before Christmas on December 16.
Sprint meet
Former Horsham Sharks, Ruby Hill, 14, and Luca Geue, 11, made finals at the Victorian Sprint Meet Championships at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.
The pair now competes for Ballarat Gold Swimming Club.
More than 1500 competitors from across the state contested the Swimming Victoria Championship competition.
After the heats Luca was ranked the fifth fastest in the 11 and under 50m butterfly and Ruby sixth fastest in the 14 years 50m breaststroke. Both swimmers set new personal bests to achieve their finals berths.
Ruby placed ninth in her final and Luca fourth, setting another personal best time.
Horsham Swimming Club’s Eloise Wills, 12, also participated at the championships and came away with four new personal best times.
Country meet
Four Wimmera District swimmers competed at Swimming Victoria’s annual 7-10 competition in Melbourne.
Ararat Swimming Club’s Billie Donnan, 9, Eoghan Purser, 10, and Asha Dale, 10, and Horsham Swimming Club’s Jorja Clode, 10, competed in age-group events for 50m butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle.
Together the swimmers posted 11 personal best times. Asha scored a personal best in each of her events. Jorja had two top-10 finishes, placing fifth in both butterfly and backstroke. Billie claimed four top-10 finishes, placing sixth in butterfly, fourth in backstroke, seventh in breaststroke and fourth in freestyle. Eoghan notched three personal bests and finished on the podium in third place for the 50m backstroke.
