Horsham Hornets will look for an explosive start against Swan Hill when they return to their home court on Sunday.
The Hornets have retained top spot on the Country Basketball League north-west conference ladder after defeating Mildura Heat in a thriller.
The Horsham outfit triumphed the home side by three points in overtime, 80-77.
Coach Cam Bruce said while he was pleased to snare the win, there was room for improvement. “I was happy with parts of our performance and I was happy with the result, but I feel we didn’t come ready to play and they did,” he said.
“They set the tone early with their aggressive style of play, which is something I want us to do.”
Tim Pickert top-scored with 31 points and Bruce said several players stood up at different stages of the game.
“Jake Hobbs really found his feet near the end of the game and he shot some crucial buckets in overtime,” he said.
“Mitch Martin and Jezza McKenzie also impressed and held their own in overtime.”
The Hornets defeated Swan Hill convincingly the first time the pair met, in round two.
“It was their first game so I’m expecting them to be tougher this time around,” Bruce said. He said under-16 squad members Sam Breuer, Ben Hobbs, Austin McKenzie and Harley Pope would sit on the bench this week.
“I’m hoping to get them all on the court at the same time,” he said. “It will be great experience. They are all 14 and 15-year-old kids and they are the future.”
The Hornets play the Flyers at Horsham Basketball Stadium at 2pm. The Lady Hornets are coming off a bye and will kick-start Sunday’s action at noon.
Ararat Redbacks fell short of victory at the weekend and have a rest this week with a bye.
