Horsham swimmers set goals for long course country championships

Six Wimmera swimmers will showcase their talents in Shepparton after qualifying for Swimming Victoria’s Long Course Country Championships.
The championships run from Friday to Sunday and will involve 589 competitors vying for medals and personal bests across 108 events.
Swimmers will contest heats in the morning and finals in the afternoon.
Horsham Swimming Club members Montanna Connelly, Maddix Hughes, Deacon Briggs, Claudia Lanyon and Eloise Wills will represent the region alongside Ararat’s Eoghan Purser.
Horsham club publicity officer Helen Wills said all swimmers would aim to set personal bests in their individual events.
“It will come down to how they feel on the day, what their mindset is and the preparation they have done in the pool prior to the championships,” she said.
“The swimmers are keen to represent Horsham and Ararat and the girls are looking forward to competing in the relays.”
With four female swimmers qualifying, the Horsham club has entered freestyle and medley 16 years and under relays.Montanna is back for her second country championships appearance, after experiencing her first taste in Sale in 2017.
She will compete in the 14-15 years girls 100-metre backstroke.
Maddix will compete in the same event, plus the 14-15 years girls 100m breaststroke.
“Maddix previously competed at country championships in 2015 at Geelong in backstroke and a relay team,” Mrs Wills said.
“Deacon will have his third visit to country championships after competing in Bendigo in 2016 and Sale in 2017. He will compete in the 13 and under boys 200m individual medley and 13 years boys 100m breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly.
“He has worked hard to improve his technique and stamina in his breaststroke so he is looking to excel in this event.”
Claudia will compete in her first long course championships after competing in short course country championships in Wangaratta in August last year.
She will compete in 13 years girls 100m freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke.
Eloise will line up in 12 years girls 100m freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke, along with the girls 13 and under individual medley.
“This will be Eloise’s third visit to country champs – she competed at Bendigo in 2016 and Sale in 2017,” Mrs Wills said.
Eoghan has qualified for his first country championships and will compete in 11 and under boys 50m backstroke and freestyle.
