Western Victorian sporting legends will be among Grampians Cricket Association enthusiasts who gather at Ararat’s Alexandra Oval for 50th anniversary celebrations next month.
The association has turned 50 and officials are marking the milestone by commemorating a famous 1968 Melbourne Country Week victory.
The Saturday night event will be at 7pm on February 10 with guests including former stars, long-term administrators and a variety of speakers.
In 1968 a Grampians representative team led by Ararat all-rounder Henry Gunstone clinched a Melbourne Country Week’s division-one title.

Description:

The victory was particularly notable, considering Grampians snared victory by a solitary run in the last over the day.
Association president David Turner said officials had tracked down surviving players from the team and many were attending the reunion.
“Of five association hall-of-fame members three of them were in that side,” he said.
“We also have three guest speakers on the night including Steve Maddocks who went on to play Melbourne district cricket after playing in Grampians, another former Grampians player Andrew Ingleton who has taken on Cricket Victoria’s chief executive role and inaugural association secretary Ray Blizzard.”

Former Wimmera journalist Danny Lannen, originally from Ararat, will be master of ceremonies during the night, which will also celebrate a Grampians win at a Bendigo Country Week competition a fortnight ago.
Mr Lannen said he looked forward to the night.
“The likes of Henry Gunstone, Gerry Brennan and Herbie Bourke couldn’t really have been bigger local legends for generations growing up in Ararat – truly greats in a great era in cricket,” he said.
“Their careers were measured by fine sportsmanship and epic feats. Gunno would make the ball talk and peel off a ton a game, and in fact he made more than 130 hundreds, which is just staggering. Gerry would rip teams apart with a nine-for, he was also a brilliant allrounder but one of the quickest going around, and Herbie was a consistently prodigious runmaker.”
Gunstone, Brennan and Bourke will be among guests during reunion celebrations, as will Ray Robbie, reputably the only player to have played at least one game in every season of the association since its inception.
Mr Turner said organisers had invited as many former association officials as they could find.
“We expecting between 150 and 180 people for what will be a great night of cricket celebrations. It is a significant milestone and well worth celebrating,” he said.
Single tickets cost $25 and $40 a double. The night will include finger food and drinks at bar prices.
People keen to attend can call Mr Turner on 0417 501 729, Gary Cunningham 0407 059 873 or Gary Hannett, 0427 931 957.
