Wimmera swimmers shine at championships

Wimmera swimmers, including competitors now swimming for clubs in larger provincial centres, performed admirably at Victorian Country Long Course Championships at Shepparton.
Montanna Connelly, 15, Deacon Briggs, 13, Maddix Hughes, 14, Claudia Lanyon, 13, and Eloise Wills, 12, of Horsham and Eoghan Purser, 11, of Ararat represented Wimmera District 12 at the meeting.
Other Wimmera swimmers who qualified for the January 26 to 28 titles included Lily Eldridge, Bendigo East, Matthew Ough, Ballarat, and Ruby Hill, Luca and Isabella Geue and Miette Hopper, Ballarat Gold.
Horsham’s Luca Geue and Miette Hopper and Warracknabeal swimmer Lily Eldridge, who all qualified for finals in multiple individual events, achieved outstanding results.

In the finals Luca, finished with a second placing for 11 and under boys 50-metre freestyle and a third in 11 and under 50m butterfly.
Miette finished fifth in both girls 14 to 15 years 100m breaststroke and the women’s open 100m breaststroke finals and Lily finished fourth in a girls 14 to 15 years 100m breaststroke final.
Lily also achieved the following in her relays – third in the girls 16 and under 200m freestyle relay; third in 16 and under medley relay, second in 200m 14 and under girls freestyle relay and first in the girls 14 and under 200m medley relay.
Matthew, of Horsham, qualified for five individual events and Ruby swam in three individual events.
Relay success
For Wimmera District 12 representatives, Horsham relay teams beat entry times in both freestyle and medley events; Eoghan set personal best times in 11 and under 50m backstroke and freestyle events; Deacon set four person bests in 200m individual medley and 100m breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly and finished in the top 10 in the 100m breaststroke.
Eloise also set a new personal best in the 100m breaststroke and swam in two finals, placing fourth in the 100m freestyle and sixth in 100m backstroke.
Swimmers competed in a vibrant atmosphere as the crowd cheered and encouraged competitors in the pool.
The titles featured about 600 swimmers from 42 clubs.
