Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre members will push ahead and buy an historic Wirraway aircraft after raising about $20,000 at a Wheels for Wirraway event.
The rare Wirraway, one of the types of aircraft used at the RAAF’s Nhill air base during the Second World War, will complete its last flight when it lands at Nhill on April 28.
The heritage centre needs less than $30,000 to complete its goal of raising $300,000 for the aircraft and is confident it can make up most of the shortfall through further donations.

Centre spokeswoman Jenny Creek said the Wheels for Wirraway event had been a great day and financially very successful.
“We had between 600 and 700 people there and certainly a lot of great and creative displays,” she said.
People were invited to display anything with wheels at the event and attractions ranged from vintage bicycles and model cars and trains to spinning wheels.

An invitation for people in Nhill to put ‘wheels’ in gardens also led to a ‘wheel trail’ involving 24 gardens.
The centre has raised about $275,000 for the Wirraway in less than two years through community donations and without government grants.
