Ararat mayor Glenda McLean has asked fellow councilors to join her for a 5pm gathering before Ararat Rural City Council’s 6pm meeting tomorrow.
Cr McLean has a job at Queensland’s North West Hospital and Health Service at Mt Isa. The health service has confirmed her appointment.
Ararat deputy mayor Gwenda Allgood confirmed Cr McLean had asked councilors to join her at the 5pm gathering, adding that she knew nothing more of the circumstances.
Cr McLean has a background in community health.
Ararat has been awash with speculation since Friday about the whereabouts of Cr McLean following unconfirmed reports that Ararat’s mayoral vehicle had been impounded in Melbourne, a removal truck had been at her residence, that she had taken on an interstate job and that people had been unable to contact her.
Some callers to The Weekly Advertiser were concerned about her safety.
Ararat council officials had also been unsure of her whereabouts but had said they expected McLean to attend tomorrow night’s council meeting.
The lack of information about the mayor’s whereabouts prompted a response from Ararat businessman David Hosking.
Mr Hosking said he was disappointed and the reaction to the mayor’s unexplained absence reflected a desperate need for the State Government to take further action to restore community confidence in the council.
