Harrow-Balmoral has gone from strength to strength in the past few weeks and will have a good indication of where it is at after it takes on second-placed Natimuk United on Saturday.
The Ewes have only dropped one game this Horsham District league season – to undefeated Laharum – while the Southern Roos have started to settle after a personnel change-up in the off-season.
Harrow-Balmoral is equal with Swifts and Edenhope-Apsley on points but jumped into third spot following a win over Kalkee thanks to superior percentage.
The Kees led by two goals at the half-time break in the back-and-forth encounter, with the Southern Roos taking the same buffer into the last quarter.
An accurate final term from shooter Amy Lewis helped get the Roos over the line.
Defenders Ebonie Salter and Ella Rees were key contributors in the triumph and will have vital roles in this week’s clash with the Ewes.
Up the other end, Lewis and Sammy Crick will need to be switched on against resolute Natimuk United defenders Jo Taylor and Casey Vanstan.
The Ewes were too good for Edenhope-Apsley last week but the Saints certainly put up a fight. They trailed by only a goal at quarter time before the Ewes started to pull away in the second term. The Ewes went on to win by 15 goals, 43-28.
Shannon Couch shot a game-high 26 goals despite the best efforts of defenders Cynthia Watt and Alex Lang.
Winners list
The Saints will return to the winners list against Jeparit-Rainbow at Jeparit, although the Storm will give its opponent a run for its money.
Defender Claire Schulz earned best-on-court accolades for her difficult role curbing the influence of standout Laharum goalie, Caitlin Story.
Story finished with 49 goals in the Demons’ comprehensive 50-goal victory over the Storm.
The fifth-placed Saints will take no prisoners this week as they look to build important percentage for the run home.
Laharum will continue on its winning way against Pimpinio, which has some talented players but is struggling to settle and find consistency.
The Tigers were on song in goals early against Noradjuha-Quantong last week before falling away in the second half.
Bombers defender Brooke Pay piled on the pressure, while young goalie Abbie Bell lifted in the latter stages of the game.
Versatile players Jenelle Baker and Kelsey Hamilton were best for the Tigers in the 12-goal loss.
The Bombers will meet Rupanyup this week and need a win to stay in touch with the top six.
The sides should enjoy a good tussle in the midcourt, with centre Alex Downes in good form for the Panthers against Swifts.
Rupanyup pushed Swifts last week, with the scores level at half time before the Baggies pulled away to win by five goals.
Taylors Lake returns from a bye and will face a sixth-placed Kalkee looking to bounce back from consecutive losses to two top-six sides.
Round-12 results: Laharum d Jeparit-Rainbow 73-23, Noradjuha-Quantong d Pimpinio 49-37, Swifts d Rupanyup 51-46, Natimuk United d Edenhope-Apsley 43-28, Harrow-Balmoral d Kalkee 44-38.
