LETTER | White Ribbon Walk disappointing

SIR, – I participated in Ararat’s White Ribbon Walk supporting victims of domestic abuse.
I was disappointed – Ararat is in the top 10 regions for domestic abuse in Victoria, and the number of women murdered by their partners has increased significantly.
Does ‘The Walk’, have an impact on these crimes? Uncertain. I participate – walk, pledge and listen to speeches and survivor stories.
I thank this year’s organisers. The path along Barkly Street was public and more visual than previous paths.
I made some observations during the walk and I am open to correction.
If I have overlooked your organisation, I apologise.
Unlike previous years, schools were absent.
The presenters stated that the most effective weapon was education, to younger generations.
We need to educate boys – dad’s violence is wrong.
Usually, walkers are flanked by a handful of footballers – this year they were absent.
I’d encourage local football-netball clubs to introduce policies, cancelling memberships of players found guilty of domestic violence or sexist behaviour, and not allow them to be eligible for best and fairest awards.
Of the many Christian denominations present in Ararat, they didn’t unite for this cause.
At least four Commandments are broken by violent perpetrators.
When Christ said, ‘What you do to the least of my brethren, you do to me’, he included domestic partners of all descriptions.
If the White Ribbon Walk is to influence the number of domestic-violence cases reported in the Wimmera-Mallee, we need more community leaders to walk and not remain silent.
