Junior Horsham basketballers Kristal Hounslow, Tyra King and Jandamurra Lauricella are among the first players ever selected for Basketball Victoria’s new under-14 indigenous team.
Hounslow and King were picked for the girls squad and Lauricella qualified for the boys team after a two-day camp in Melbourne at the weekend.
The teams will take part in several competitions in 2019, including the Eltham Dandenong Junior Basketball Tournament in January.
Horsham’s Rebecca McIntyre will help mentor Hounslow and King as assistant coach of the under-14 girls team.
Basketball Victoria project officer Matt Dunstan said members of both teams would receive plenty of development opportunities and be exposed to elite-level sport.
“These kids will proudly represent their communities and Basketball Victoria at a number of incredible tournaments throughout the state next year,” he said.
“This is a fantastic step for Victorian basketball and we’re excited to see these eager, young athletes join the team.”
