Green Lake algae warning

Green Lake is open again.

Green Lake.

Horsham Rural City Council has closed popular Green Lake near Horsham after an algae outbreak on Wednesday.
Horsham Rural City Council’s infrastructure director John Martin said samples of water from the lake had been taken for laboratory testing to confirm the species of algae.
The outbreak is suspected of being potentially toxic blue-green algae.
“It is most likely that what is being seen is potentially toxic, and warning signs will be erected later today,” Mr Martin said.
“People who come into contact with this water should wash affected skin immediately in clean water.”
“People are also advised not to use the affected water for cooking, drinking, washing or showering. Boiling the affected water will not make it safe to use,” he said.
Council staff will continue to monitor the lake for the presence of toxic algae, and update the status as required.
