Great Western highway store moves

There will be a new port of call in Great Western for egg and bacon sandwiches and newspapers with the relocation of Great Western General Store.
First established in 1852, the store has shifted across the Western Highway and will operate next to Salinger’s Café.
Owner Tracey McCartney has operated the business, which includes a general store and post office, for the past 12 years.
She said she had made the change after failing to reach an agreement with a landlord.
“It’s been hugely upsetting. Great Western needs a general store and post office. They are essential services,” she said.
“I looked into so many options and in true Great Western style a plan was made to ensure the service would continue in the town.”
Ms McCartney will run post-office services from a small shop behind the chemist at 96 Main Street and the general store next to Salinger’s Café.
Great Western Enterprises manager Bruce Ahchow, who owns Salinger’s Café, said his business had been busy working to a February 15 deadline converting the building to accommodate the general store.
“We first considered making it at part of the current cafe, but Salinger’s is busy enough on it’s own and we didn’t want to change that ‘Salinger experience’ for our customers.
“The general store will be beside Salinger’s Cafe, and operate as a separately defined space.”
The Great Western General Store is open seven days a week and Great Western Post Office will be open from 9.30am to 12.30pm Monday to Friday.
