Great Western’s unbeaten run continues

By Jonathan Box
After eight rounds of Mininera and District Football League, Great Western remains a game clear on top of the ladder after continuing its unbeaten run with the scalp of reigning premier Wickliffe-Lake Bolac.
The Lions showed their dominance from the start, kicking nine goals straight in the opening quarter.
The dominance would continue throughout the day as they increased their lead at every break.
The Magpies put in a last-ditch effort and regained some momentum by winning the last quarter. But inaccuracy in front of goal and the class of Great Western proved to be too much, as the Lions finished with a 42-point victory.
Gerrard Cunningham and Steven Lorenzo did plenty in front of goal kicking five each, while Jeremy Cronin, Lachlan Malloy and Jesse Barnett joined Andrew Cameron to be the best players on the ground.
The Lions will face another big challenge this weekend when they travel to Penshurst to take on the second-placed Bombers.
Penshurst, hard to beat at home, has only dropped one game so far and will be poised and ready for the challenge Great Western brings.
Penshurst is coming off an easy 17-goal win over Hawkesdale-Macarthur, and with players like Sam Weston, Justin Eales and Todd Hatherall all in form and Ben Hunt coming off a nine-goal haul, the Bombers will be ready for the challenge.
After the weekend’s defeat, Wickliffe-Lake Bolac will have a chance to put itself into the top five when it takes on Glenthompson-Dunkeld.
The teams sit on the same points in fifth and sixth position, in a three-way battle for fifth with Tatyoon.
Both teams will be keen to get an important win to put breathing space between them and the bottom half of the ladder.
Although defeated at the weekend, the Magpies still showed plenty of fight, with Brock Wardlaw kicking six goals and Charlie Vallence doing his bit with three, while Harley Hunter and Nicholas Chirnside shone.
This game will be no walk in the park for the Magpies, because the Rams will be up and about after a 34-goal win over Moyston-Willaura.
Glenthompson-Dunkeld shared the load up forward in the dominant display with 12 goal scorers, 10 of whom kicked multiples, and Mitchell Johnson, Tyler Fehsler and Michael Uebergang dominant.
In other games, Caramut will host Ararat Eagles, Lismore-Derrinallum plays Tatyoon at home, SMW Rovers travel to Moyston to take on Moyston-Willaura and Woorndoo-Mortlake should have no trouble when it plays Hawkesdale-Macarthur at home.
