Water diversion plea

A group of Horsham district landowners has used a snap visit to the Wimmera by Victorian political leaders to lobby for floodwater for near-empty lakes south-east of Horsham. The group appealed to Premier John Brumby to step in and direct authorities in charge of water-sharing arrangements to ‘seize the opportunity’ to combine flood mitigation with recreational development. It also put its case to coalition leaders Ted Baillieu and Peter Ryan who were also in the Wimmera early this week to assess the impact of flood. The group believes GWMWater and Wimmera Catchment Management Authority boards could easily resolve Horsham district flood issues during the next week by agreeing to direct water into Pine, Green or Dock lakes. Russell Peucker said flooding represented a potential windfall for all and failure to take advantage of the circumstance would reflect poorly on people making decisions. “We’ve been inundated at Laharum and for GWMWater and Wimmera CMA boards to not take advantage of the situation would be an act of sheer bloody mindedness,” he said. “We have the ability to mitigate flooding by running water from Huddlestons Weir into Taylors or Pine Lake.
