Karnak resident Ken Pillar hopes to raise $10,000 for cancer research as he makes a month-long trek across Victoria. The truck driver has scaled down from a big rig to a horse-drawn cart for a 570-kilometre journey from Goroke to Mansfield to raise money for the Australian Cancer Research Foundation. Ken and eight-year-old clydesdale Clyde will travel up to 30 kilometres per day, collecting donations on the way to Clyde’s new home in the state’s east. “This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” Ken told The Weekly Advertiser. “A mate did a similar thing in Queensland about 15 years ago and I thought ‘that is awesome’ and it’s something I’ve wanted to do ever since,” he said. “Finally the opportunity is here and I’m taking it.” With the support of the Goroke community, Ken has spent several months preparing for the adventure that will see him spending nights in a converted milk cart. “The people of Goroke have been fantastic, with businesses providing sponsorship, the Apex Club giving me helping hand, and the people in town wishing me all the best for trip,” Ken said. Goroke Apex Club hosted a barbecue lunch for Ken and Clyde at the town hall on Saturday to allow the public to bid the pair farewell. They aim to reach their destination on April 3.
