Pulses were the theme as Grains Innovation Park in Horsham hosted a visit from Governor of Victoria David de Kretser and Mrs de Kretser.

Professor de Kretser was in the Wimmera as part of a two-day tour last week.

GIP centre leader Susan Findlay said Professor de Kretser met staff and toured the facility.

“He learned how the Wimmera was the pulse heartland of Australia and how GIP adds value to the regional economy, employing staff with diverse and extensive skills,” Ms Findlay said.

“The tour focussed on the healthy nature of pulses as a food.”

“We visited the pathology laboratory where scientists outlined work being carried out to better understand and respond to crop diseases.

“We also saw research being carried out to test new lines of chickpea for agronomic and other qualities.

“Professor and Mrs de Kretser then visited a large nursery where peas and other pulses were growing.”

Ms Findlay said it was an honour to host Professor de Kretser as part of his Wimmera tour.
