Wimmera communities have an opportunity to protect historical sites through new Victorian Government Heritage Grants funding.

Planning Minister Justin Madden has called on Victorians to help find and protect heritage sites and objects through the program.

Mr Madden said the fifth Heritage Grants Program would provide $1.82 million to help people care for and interpret heritage places and items and help local government provide guidance on heritage issues.

Mr Madden said the 2010-11 program provided money for:

• repair of heritage places and objects;

• interpretation of heritage places and objects;

• local government heritage studies and advice; and

• documentation projects.

The grants are for places in the Victorian Heritage Register or included in a Heritage Overlay. Objects must be included in the Victorian Heritage Register.

Applications close on August 24. Information is available at dpcd.vic.gov.au.
