Informal vote high in ‘mini Melbourne Cup’

More than one in 20 Wannon voters signalled their confusion and lack of political inspiration with an informal ballot at Saturday’s Federal Election. The informal vote, up almost 50 percent on the 2007 election, was well ahead of the statewide trend in the nine-candidate Wannon election, described as a ‘mini Melbourne Cup’ by political expert Dr Benno Engels. Major-party candidates Dan Tehan and Judith McNamara suffered big negative swings while the five independents failed to make much impact. Mr Tehan retained the seat for the Liberal Party, succeeding retired former Speaker of the House of Representatives David Hawker, who held the seat for more than 27 years. He said he was now focussed on getting on with his new job representing the people of Wannon. “The overall result was very humbling and very pleasing,” Mr Tehan said. “We ran a very positive campaign and look, there’s a lot of hard work which really starts from now. I’m really looking forward to that,” he said. James Purcell, leading vote-getter among the Wannon independents with almost six percent of votes, described the result as pleasing. “The collapse of the Labor vote as well as the Liberal vote meant we didn’t achieve our goal of making it a marginal seat but 15 percent of votes for the independents was pleasing,” ...
