Donation gets youth centre on the road

The dream to develop a Wimmera Youth and Community Mobile Centre is finally becoming a reality. Horsham firm Wombat Conversions is constructing the purpose-built fifth-wheeler trailer, bringing to life two years of planning and development for the $300,000 project. Wimmera Uniting Care chief executive Wendy Middleton said Wombat Conversions winning a $185,000 contract to build the trailer was testimony to the manufacturing skills available in the Wimmera. “It meant the money spent on the project would be going to a local business that sources local labour,” Ms Middleton said. “The special tow vehicle has also been purchased locally.” Purpose-built WYCMC is a purpose-built mobile youth and community centre consisting of a fifth-wheeler trailer towed by a small truck. It will be fully equipped and fitted with state-of-the-art audio-visual and music equipment, computers, TV/DVD/CD players, Playstations, Xboxes, sporting equipment, games and a barbecue. It is designed as a ‘multifunctional facility’ to provide activities for youth and adults. “The project is designed to work towards addressing the issues of isolation, boredom, lack of social and recreational opportunities, drug and alcohol issues, drought, and financial plight,” Ms Middleton said. “It will deliver a range o...
