Posted by Weekly Advertiser in Art & Entertainment on 25 Aug 2010 at 03:31 am

Former Horsham radio announcer and award-winning author Sue Lawson will be guest judge of this year’s Wimmera Regional Library Corporation short-story competition. The Colac-based creator of My Gran’s Different and the popular Diva children’s series will be turning her attention to the winter writings of budding Wimmera authors hopeful of claiming a share of $1000 in cash and prizes. Organiser Elinor Hateley said she was delighted to have Mrs Lawson providing her time to the competition. “It will be fantastic to have Sue back in the Wimmera to assess the talent of our local writers,” Mrs Hateley said. “She knows the area well and will have great insight to pass on to aspiring authors.” Mrs Lawson worked as a teacher and as an announcer and producer at Horsham radio stations 3WV and 3WM before serious illness in the late ‘90s motivated her to devote more time to her true passion – writing. Her debut book My Gran’s Different, about a young boy dealing with his grandmother’s illness, was an international hit and led to series of successful novels for young readers. She won the 2007 Australian Family Therapist Award for Children’s Literature for her novel Allie McGregor’s True Colours, and was shortlisted for the WA Australian Young Reader’s Award for 2002’s Dragon’s Tear.
