Donald High School student Alex Dunstan is the winner of the 2010 Art Is... Elemental logo design competition.
The year 11 student received $300 for his winning logo and free mentorship from Horsham web and graphic design studio Phunkemedia.
Alex’s logo was one of 19 entries, including one entry all the way from Denmark.
Alex said that he drew on the four elements – water, earth, fire and air – for inspiration to design a logo incorporating flora and fauna which relied upon all of the elements.
“Plants and flora rely upon water to grow, earth to soak up the nutrients, air to disperse pollen and fire to cleanse dense areas of growth,” Alex said.
Festival director Meg Coutts said Alex’s logo was chosen for its earthy tones and design versatility, allowing certain elements of the design to be used throughout the marketing material.
Alex said he was looking forward to further developing his design with the staff at Phunkemedia.
He said he hoped his opportunity for free mentorship in the design field would give him a head start with university, where he hopes to study graphic design and specialise in special effects.
Alex hasn’t yet worked out how he will spend his prize, seeing a bigger advantage to winning the competition.
“I think the reputation associated with winning the competition is better than the actual winnings. It all looks great on the resume.”
Alex’s logo will feature on posters, flyers, websites and all other promotional material for the Art is... Elemental festival from March 19-27, 2010.
