Art is… festival celebrates

Horsham’s community arts festival continues to celebrate a 25-year milestone regardless of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year’s festival theme of ‘Art is… Still Happening’ has been pertinent considering circumstances and will look back as well as forward with an exhibition during the next month.

The exhibition will be at Horsham’s Redrock Books and Gallery in Firebrace Street and is open during the bookshop’s regular hours of 10am to 4pm, Tuesday to Thursday and 10am to 4pm Fridays, until October 3.

Festival spokesman Alistair Shaw said communities drawing on their creativity had been a constant feature of the festival and continued to be an important part of future planning.

“The exhibition showcases the early years of the festival, with a particular feature being hundreds of photographs of participants enjoying the activities and creations that have made up the festival since its inception,” he said.

“The original photographs are all available to take home for a gold coin donation.”

Gill Venn, who has maintained an involvement during the life of the festival and has curated the exhibition, is encouraging people to take their memories home.

“It’s better that these snapshots of our region’s creative history should be reminders of people’s involvement of that in their homes than in storage in our office,” she said.

“I recognise many of the children from the first five years who have grown and are now young adults contributing in different ways to our community. Our festival’s history is not just 10 days each year, it is also a series of moments of our community’s development.”

The festival has also established an online repository for people to deposit their own digital memories. People can email artis@artis.
