Police tackling rise in burglary and theft in the Wimmera and Grampians

Burglary and theft offences are on the rise in the Wimmera and Grampians with police calling for residents to take proactive steps to help keep their homes and belongings secure.

Police in Horsham and Northern Grampians have seen an increase in offences in recent months.

The crimes have involved theft of fuel, phones, power tools, cash and credit cards, and household electrical items including computers and tablets.

Western Region Division 4 Investigation, Response, Tasking and Coordination Acting Inspector Brendan Broadbent said Victoria Police would target and detect offenders but there were several things people can do to keep their homes and property secure.

“With people now able to leave their homes across the Wimmera region, it’s a timely reminder that there might be opportunities for people to break in,” inspector Broadbent said.

“We each have a role to play when it comes to making our homes, workplaces and neighbourhoods safer.

“It’s important to lock windows and doors, even when you’re at home, as these are the most common entry point for burglars.

“Reporting as soon as you can also gives police the best opportunity to locate offenders, recover stolen property and keep everyone safe.

“Most importantly, if you’re home when someone breaks in always remember that the safety of yourself and others is more important than any possession.

“Find a safe place and call Triple 000.”

In securing your home and vehicle, the following safety tips are recommended:

• Install good quality locks on doors and windows.

• Lock all windows and doors, even when you’re at home – unlocked side and rear doors are the most common entry points for burglars.

• Remove valuable items from plain sight – particularly car keys, wallets and cash. Make your house look occupied at all times. For example, ask a neighbour to bring in your mail and bins if you’re away for a while.

• Join your local Eyewatch Facebook page and be an active part of crime prevention in your community
