Battle for top pennant tennis spot

By SARAH MATTHEWS

Central Wimmera Tennis Association pennant ladder leader Horsham Lawn and second-placed Kalkee will battle for top spot on Saturday.

Both teams, along with third-placed Horsham Saints, are on 16 points apiece, with four wins and one loss.

The Kees will be keen to return to the winners list after going down to St Michaels by four sets in round five.

While the Kees went in undermanned, the Saints featured a strengthened line-up, headed by McDonald sisters Steffi – back from playing college tennis in the United States – and Jess.

Steffi played as the number-one man, teaming up with Ian Nitschke and Nick Robertson for wins before falling short of Jeff Friberg in a tiebreaker.

Jess, the number-one woman, won all three of her sets for the day, including a close doubles encounter with Marli Pymer.

Friberg was the only Kalkee man to claim a set for the day, with the team’s remaining sets secured by Anna Exell and Melissa Beddison.

The Saints will meet Central Park, coming off a four-set loss to Drung South Purple, this week.

Central Park started well, with Matt Jones and Brendan Nitschke teaming up to defeat Dylan Emmerson and Benn Molineaux 8-4 in the opening rubber.  Nitschke featured in the team’s remaining victories, including an 8-0 singles win over Molineaux.

Nitschke’s extra hitting practice with usual number one Lance Dugan – unavailable last week – is clearly paying off, evidenced by his consistent efforts of late.

Drung South’s women were again potent, with Kate-Lyn Perkin, Yolly Molineaux and Kirby Knight finishing the afternoon undefeated.

Drung South Purple will go head to head with clubmate Drung South Orange in round six.

The Orange outfit had a tough encounter with Horsham Lawn last week, falling short 2-55 to 10-87.

The competition’s young guns led the way, with Drung’s Logan Casey featuring in his side’s two victories, including a comprehensive singles win over Stuart McRae, 8-1.

Tahlia Thompson and Gemma Walker continued to impress for Lawn, enjoying a successful afternoon.

Results: St Michaels 8-83 d Kalkee 4-56, Drung South Purple 8-74 d Central Park 4-65, Horsham Lawn 10-87 d Drung South Orange 2-55.
