Yarriambiack Shire Council is keen to hear from parents across its Dunmunkle district as it explores childcare service needs.

Council leaders are encouraging Minyip, Murtoa and Rupanyup district parents to complete an online survey as part of the investigation.

Council chief executive Jessie Holmes said childcare in the Dunmunkle catchment had been lacking ‘for quite some time’.

“It is now at a point where we have a willing workforce, but, due to the lack of childcare options, they are unable to work,” she said.

The council is asking survey participants to provide feedback on locations, format of childcare and children demographics to obtain a clear picture of circumstances and response needed.

The council will collate survey results and prepare a business plan to develop the project to a stage where it is ‘infrastructure shovel ready’ and in a position to attract a childcare provider to run future services.

“Childcare is critical to residents, and potential residents looking to move to our region,” Ms Holmes said.

“Our youngest residents are also missing out on the social and educational aspects of childcare, engaging with other children and learning social skills. We are working hard to rectify this gap in our early childhood services.

“Childcare shortages have been highlighted as an area of concern for our residents through community engagement sessions throughout February and March.

“The council is addressing this concern and working with the community to not only meet current needs, but also plan for the future needs of childcare in Minyip, Murtoa and Rupanyup.”
