Horsham College shines in year-end VCE results

Horsham College students have again recorded strong results in Victorian Certification of Education subjects, with a significant increase in the number achieving results in the top 10 percent of the state.

A quarter of students eligible for an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank, ATR, also achieved results over 80.

School leaders were ‘particularly’ proud of the efforts of school dux Jacob Casey, whose marks were in the top one percent in the state for physics and systems engineering.

Jacob now hopes to pursue mechanical-engineering studies in Adelaide.

This year is the fourth year the college has had an acceleration program, which allows academically minded students to complete a VCE study subject in year 10.

This year, one of Horsham College’s year-10 students, Lani Jones, received a result in the top one percent of the state in visual communication, alongside students two years older than her.

Alurhian Leffler

Alurhian Leffler, a year-11 student, also impressed, with two year-12 results in the top five percent of the state, in psychology and further maths.

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics, STEM, subjects continue to be one of Horsham College’s strongest areas, with eight out of the top 10 students made up of a year-12 specialist maths class.

Fifty percent of the class were girls, bucking the state-wide trend of a decline of girls in STEM across the state.

College principal Rob Pyers said Horsham College offered the broadest range of VCE subjects in the Wimmera.

“It doesn’t matter what type of VCE program a student wants to do, we can offer them their preferred combination on campus at Horsham College,” he said.
