Horsham Cricket Association teams grapple in fight for position

By Dean Lawson

An A Grade arm-wrestle on the outer edge of Horsham Cricket Association’s top four will tighten further this Saturday when rivals Jung Tigers and Laharum resume pleasantries.

The Tigers and Demons meet in a back-to-back encounter, fresh after Laharum secured points against their opponents in a two-day game at Horsham City Oval.

The result resurrected Laharum’s pre-Christmas position, putting the team on equal points with the Tigers on an overall ladder and a game outside the top four.

This Saturday Laharum will attempt to follow up the result and consolidate its freshly won ground by beating the Tigers again, this time in a one-day game at Laharum.

Last week a score of 205 proved enough for the Mountain Men to defend as Jung Tigers crashed to be all out for 181.

Adam Barber proved to be the primary innings wrecker for Laharum, capturing 4-52 working alongside Anthony Molloy, 3-65.

The Tigers lost their way early in the chase before Angus Adams, 39, and Dale Dridan, 30, provided some hope.

Veterans Steve Leith, 34, and Chris Walter, 43, also provided resistance down the order.

The Tigers will be hoping for a reversal in fortunes this weekend.

Horsham Saints, meanwhile, managed to keep hold of fourth place on the ladder by beating Colts at Dudley Cornell Park in Horsham.

The Saints successfully defended 238, bowling the home side out for 153, with Jackson Davidson, 4-5, and Jono Carroll 3-7 doing much of the damage.

Damian Boddi top-scored in the middle order for Colts with 50 and Marc Thomas hit 31.

Colts had started the chase well, Dylan Arnott and Nathan Keel sharing a 34-run opening stand.

But wickets fell in twos and threes and too rapidly for Colts to stay in the chase.

This week Horsham Saints will tackle Blackheath-Dimboola in one-day conditions at Horsham’s Coughlin Park.

Blackheath-Dimboola couldn’t avoid an outright loss to Homers, following a first-innings score of 65 the week before with 126 in response to an overall Pigeons score of 267.

Brent Tough, 39, Chris Hauselberger, 30, and skipper Rob Somers, 28, offered the most resistance for the Bulls.

Left-arm spinner Jason Kannar, 5-27, and medium-pace all-rounder Craig Britten did the majority of the damage with the ball. Kannar’s five-wicket haul followed an unbeaten 122.

Colts face another tough assignment, fronting up against Noradjuha-Toolondo at Horsham City Oval on Saturday.

Noradjuha-Toolondo faced a daunting task of chasing down Rupanyup-Minyip’s 402 last weekend and was 167 when it lost its final wicket.

David Combe top-scored in the middle order for the Bullants with 44 and Justtin Combe, 28, and Kent Hair and John Heard, both 18, also spent time at the crease.

Rupanyup-Minyip, sitting a clear second on the ladder, shared its bowling spoils and will now prepare for an acid test against Homers in what looms as match of the round.

The Blue Panthers will take on the Pigeons at home at Rupanyup.
