Intersection upgrades win approval

Two intersections in the Wimmera will undergo upgrades after their inclusion in the State Government 2026-27 Budget.

Funding has been allocated for the intersection of Western Highway and Jackmans Road, at Dadswells Bridge; and the intersection of Murtoa-Glenorchy Road and Horsham-Lubeck Road, at Lubeck.

The Dadswells Bridge crossroad is noted to be ‘a high-priority intersection improvement project’, addressing safety and operational risks for heavy vehicles, and will seek co-funding from the Federal Government’s Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program.

The current conditions, including a lack of turning lanes and high competing movements with the Western Highway, create a high-crash risk from vehicles stopped while waiting to turn, increasing rear-end collisions and risky behaviour.

Upgrades will include swept path accommodation, staggered side roads and shoulder works, which will improve turning safety, support escalating freight demand, and maintain transport efficiency.

The Lubeck intersection upgrade project is also ‘a high-priority project to address significant safety risks’ after being identified as a dangerous and non-standard configuration.

The intersection has recorded multiple crashes, including one fatality, due to its acute approach angle and limited sight distance.

However the funding allocation for the Lubeck project only supports planning and design, not actual works.

Member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora last week welcomed the government’s investment.

“Local families know the dangerous intersections and how critical improving safety is for reducing crash incidents and saving lives,” she said.

“Labor is getting on with the job – upgrading local roads and making it easier and safer for our community to get around.”

The Victorian Budget 2026-27 has allocated $102.6-million for vital road projects across the state that aim to boost reliability and safety, and cut congestion.

Of the money allocated, $73.4-million is to develop projects, tackle congestion and improve safety in regional Victoria.
