Laharum Landcare celebrates 30 years

One of the Wimmera’s longest continually operating Landcare groups will celebrate its 30th anniversary next week.

Laharum Landcare Group will notch the milestone with a dinner and presentation night at Laharum Community Hall from 6pm on Tuesday, April 9.

Horsham Rural City Council Landcare facilitator Annie Hobby said the group would celebrate its many achievements.

“They’ve done an amazing job with pest plant and animal control on their own properties, and as people have moved in and out of the area they’ve done heaps of education for new landholders,” she said.

“Revegetation and tree planting the whole way across the Laharum-Wartook area has also been a focus. Every year they run at least one community plant out, if not more.”

Ms Hobby said in recent years the group had begun to turn its efforts to the conservation of threatened species.

She said a presenter from Stawell-based Project Platypus would talk to attendees about the conservation of squirrel gliders next week.

Laharum Landcare Group currently has about 50 members, and Ms Hobby said she hoped many would be in attendance, alongside past members and supporters.

“Most of [the members] are active in some way, whether it’s through attending meetings or activities and events throughout the year,” she said.

“You might not have everyone there at the same time, but it has quite a big member base for a fairly rural group.”

People can call Ms Hobby on 0407 914 498 for more information about the celebration.
