Laharum is one win away from its second Horsham District league A Grade netball premiership in three years after sending a statement with a dominant win against Noradjuha-Quantong at the weekend.

The Demons wasted no time establishing their superiority in a 62-37 semi-final victory over the Bombers, jumping out to a 17-10 lead at quarter time and extending their advantage at every change.

While the Bombers’ positional versatility has been one of their strengths this season, they were unable to find a good match-up for young Laharum goalie Ilze Van Zyl, who scored a game-high 42 goals against opponents Leah Mirtschin and Brooke Pay.

The Demons were aggressive when not in possession, with goal defence Ema Iredell and wing defence Rylee Hateley breaking hard on the ball to create intercepts or deflections, and goal keeper Jaspa Robinson doing her best to combat the height of Noradjuha-Quantong shooter Shannon Couch.

Couch had eight goals in the first quarter but finished with only 12 for the match as the Bombers reshuffled their attacking setup in the second half, playing Ash Morrish, 12 goals, and coach Taylor Shelley, 13, in the goal ring.

Mirtschin was named the Bombers’ best player after switching from goal defence to goal keeper and then wing defence after quarter time, but her team’s numerous positional changes were unable to stop a steady flow of Laharum goals.

But while Noradjuha-Quantong struggled at the weekend, it remains alive in the finals race and is set to face a team it beat less than two weeks ago – Edenhope-Apsley – for a spot in the grand final.

The Saints bounced back from their loss to the Bombers to outpace Kalkee in a 54-30 win at Edenhope on Sunday.

While the Saints extended their lead at every change, they only put the result beyond all doubt with a 17-5 final quarter.

Coach Lavinia Fox said she was impressed with the way her team bounced back following its qualifying final loss to the Bombers.

“We were super pleased to walk away with a win, but then to walk away with a 24-goal win I think definitely instilled some belief in the group moving forward,” she said.

“We respect Kalkee a lot. Obviously they were the only side to beat Laharum throughout the home-and-away rounds, so we knew they were certainly capable of beating anyone in the five.

“We finished the game quite strong, and I think that’s a testament to the fitness of the group as well, to be able to run out a full four quarters.

“We also utilised some good depth off our bench on the weekend. It was a bit of a hotter day so we used 10 of our 11 players.”

Saint goal shooter Dee Dee Lambert found her touch on Sunday a week after being well held by Noradjuha-Quantong, while Olivia Spence at goal defence and Hannah Magasanik at centre were also impressive.

The Kees’ top players were midcourters Tamika Mentha and coach Millie McRae.

Fox said her team would need to remain composed and execute well to reverse the result of its previous match against the Bombers.

“We reflected on needing to continue to work on our connections in our attacking end, just to create safer decisions and keep ourselves in possession of the ball a little bit longer,” she said.

“I think at times we caused a few too many costly turnovers in that game a fortnight ago, and given it was only a five-goal margin in the end, that’s only three turnovers.

“Obviously it’s hard to remain composed in a final, but I think we did a good job against Kalkee of making better decisions and having better shot selection too.

“Hopefully that instills some belief in our group and gets us across the line on Saturday.”
