Legal service links with maternal, child health

Ballarat and Grampians Community Legal Service will establish a new office in Horsham to provide greater support for young families experiencing family violence.

The State Government, in its latest budget, provided funding for the new office, expected to open in March.

Under an innovative model, organisations including Ballarat and Grampians Community Legal Service, BGCLS, would be linked with maternal and child health services, providing early intervention and a direct referral link for people experiencing family violence across the Grampians region.

In addition to the office in Horsham, funding would also support new roles including a family lawyer, referral and engagement practitioner and community engagement officer.

The organisation is also expanding services in outreach areas including Stawell, Ararat, St Arnaud and Daylesford.

BGCLS supported 1420 clients last year, with 1145 experiencing disadvantage and 768 experiencing family violence.

BGCLS chief executive Narelle Laing said with a new office in Horsham, BGCLS could help protect even more women and their children.
