LETTER: A true celebration;  A reckless stance

A true celebration

Our Mother’s Day Devonshire tea at the Horsham Uniting Church on May 6 was a great success and a fantastic opportunity for us to come together as a church community to celebrate mothers everywhere.

We have all had mothers, grandmothers, aunts, cousins and mentors in our lives who have helped to shape us to be the people we are today.

The Devonshire tea was an important fundraiser for the Christian Emergency Food Centre, CEFC, in Horsham.

Bev Miatke spoke at the event. She is the manager of this valuable community not-for-profit resource that is overseen by the Horsham Christian Minister’s Association.

The CEFC assists people at a time of need in the name of Jesus Christ to distribute food parcels, to give financial assistance, to make referrals to outside organisations like the Salvos and Uniting and to give a listening ear.

The CEFC is assisted by many volunteers from the Uniting churches and the community. Many of whom attended the event.

The Mission Action Group of the Horsham and District thanks the businesses of Horsham for donating prizes for the categories of memorable teacups that made our special event a success.

The Mission Action Group is pleased to announce that $1100 will be donated to the CEFC.

 A reckless stance

The Liberals-Nationals’ commitment to pause the VNI West and WRL transmission projects is more than a policy failure – it is an admission that the Liberals-Nationals Coalition are unprepared for the responsibilities of government.

This reckless stance, and policy vacuum, actively sabotages investment in new energy supply, threatens to drive power prices to record highs, and places Victoria at a direct risk of catastrophic blackouts.

Within nine years, the retirement of the ageing Loy Yang A, 2028, and Yallourn, 2035, plants will strip 3660MW of power generation from our grid.

The time for political posturing is over; the state requires coherent solutions imminently.

Again, I ask that Emma Kealy and her colleagues move beyond criticism and provide a transparent, detailed roadmap for Victoria’s energy security.

Tom Parkes,

Stawell
