Major award for photographer

A dramatic image of Wimmera cricketers in action has won The Weekly Advertiser and photographer Paul Carracher a prestigious regional newspaper industry award.

Mr Carracher’s photograph called ‘Oh so close’ won Best Sports Photo for a newspaper with circulation over 6000 at the Victorian Country Press Association Annual Conference Awards Dinner in Melbourne.

The image pipped high-quality entries from major regional newspapers across the state.

Mr Carracher captured the moment in Grampians Cricket Association when Aradale club wicket-keeper Riley Wood attempted to stump St Andrews batsman Tom Wills – only for the umpire to rule Wills not out.

Judge and former long-time Fairfax and Rural Press senior executive and Country Press Association of NSW life-member Bob Mackie described the photograph in his comments as ‘fantastic’.

“Paul Carracher in The Weekly Advertiser catches a cricket close call as a wicket-keeper whips off the bails with the batsman’s back foot in the air and out of his ground.

“This is a fantastic photo – the focus is sharp as a knife and the timing perfect with the bails in the air and the wicket-keeper’s face lit up with excitement.

“The photo was beautifully used by the newspaper, taking up the entire news hole on the back page.”
