Racing Victoria Stewards have abandoned today's Murtoa Cup due to track conditions.

Stewards made the announcment this morning after an inspection.

A section of the track has been deemed unsuitable for racing.

Murtoa racing Club secretary Phil Childs said the committee was devastated with the cancellation.

"It's not something we could prepare for," he said.

"The safety of jockeys and horses is paramount and you've just got to make the call."

"We will regroup and have another go."

"The track was looking a treat too."

Mr Childs said while the races were called off there was still plenty to see around Murtoa.

"Murtoa's Big Weekend is on so there's still lots to see and do around town.
