Netballers step up at zone tournament

Junior representative squads from the Horsham District and Wimmera leagues had an ideal tune-up for this month’s Netball Victoria zone championships at the weekend, competing against other leagues at Bendigo’s Central Victorian Netball Association Tournament.

A Horsham District 17-and-under team won its division, with other sides achieving mixed results.

Horsham District 13-and-under coach Sharon Fedke said it had been a strong showing for all of the league’s teams.

“It was a really great day with the 17s having a win. They played some amazing netball,” she said.

“They were super excited. It was their second tournament because they played at the South West Tournament in Portland, but this was their first big tournament as we lead into the zone championships in two weeks.

“They played six games and won all six. They played Bendigo in the grand final and were two goals down at one stage in the second half but fought back and ended up winning by a goal, which was really good.”

Fedke said the other teams acquitted themselves well at the tournament.

“The 15s only had one win for the day, but they had two draws. It was a tough day for them, but again it was a great learning curve to see what combinations work and what don’t,” she said.

“Even though on paper they didn’t have a lot of wins, I think it was a success in other areas.

“My 13s played 10 games, so it was a huge day for them. We had five wins and five losses. I think they learned a lot.”

The Wimmera league’s best results came in the 15-and-under and 17-and-under age groups, with both teams finishing third.

The Wimmera 15-and-under development squad finished fifth, as did the 13-and-under side.
