New surroundings for Warracknabeal’s Chloe Bibby

Warracknabeal basketballer Chloe Bibby will play for Maryland Terps in American college basketball in the approaching 2020-21 season.

University of Maryland selected the 21-year-old forward from the National Collegiate Athletic Association, NCAA, transfer portal after she decided to move from Mississippi State University.

Bibby, back in Australia, said she instantly clicked with the Maryland coaches and fellow team-mates on introducing herself through video chat from her family’s home in Warracknabeal.

“There was a genuine feeling I got from the coaching staff – they just seemed competitive and they know so much about the game and they produce a lot of pros,” she said.

“I felt really confident talking to them and they were confident in my game – it instantly felt like a good fit.

“Technology is great, we’ve just been Facetiming the team, I was able to sit down and have a home visit with them – we did a virtual tour of the university.”

Bibby said she was excited to expand on her sporting and educational opportunities at her new university.

“Maryland has a really good program – academically it’s a great university – I’m just excited about all the opportunities I’ll have, not just basketball-wise, but academically as well,” she said.

Maryland’s head coach Brenda Frese said Bibby's shooting accuracy would be an asset for the team.

"Chloe is another proven winner that will bring a ton of intangibles to our program,” she said.

“At 6'1, Chloe is a very versatile player that can play inside and out – she can shoot the three and will be another strong rebounder for us.

“Hailing all the way from Australia we are thrilled to welcome Chloe and her family into our Maryland family.”

Bibby joined Mississippi State in 2017, where she became a key player for the Bulldogs.

Bibby started 49 of 88 games in the 2019-20 season and averaged 7.2 points and 5.2 rebounds a game.

She scored 45 percent of her three-point attempts as a sophomore before tearing her anterior cruciate ligament in the 18th game of the season. She had averaged 11.9 points a game before the injury.
