VOLUNTEER SERVICE: Wimmera Health Care Group’s Petena Thomas, left, with new Wimmera Health Care Group guide Sandra Bamkin.

New volunteer guides available

Wimmera Health Care Group has developed a new volunteering opportunity for people keen to ‘make a difference’.

Chief executive Catherine Morley said new ‘Wimmera Health Care Group Guides’ would offer visitors to the health group a friendly welcoming presence and provide information about where to find services or departments.

“These helpful volunteers will assist visitors, patients and their families with general inquiries, introduce them to team members and escort them to waiting areas when needed,” she said.

WHCG Guides will initially be at the main entrance at Wimmera Base Hospital.

The hope is for more volunteers to come forward to allow the service to extend to other key entrances and waiting areas at Horsham and Dimboola campuses.

The health group wants to recruit as many ‘friendly and people-focused’ volunteers as possible for the new roles.

Ms Morley said the roles would particularly suit couples, former employees of Wimmera Health Care Group and people transitioning into retirement, especially if they had Centrelink reporting requirements under Newstart.

“There are shifts available Monday to Friday, making this opportunity flexible for most volunteers to fit into their lifestyle,” she said.

“We hope the first two WHCG Guides, Carol Hill and Sandra Bamkin, will be able to mentor new volunteers into the role by the end of the project pilot period in mid-November.”

People interested in volunteering as a guide can call volunteer program co-ordinator Stephanie Thomson on 5381 9347, Wednesdays and Fridays.
