Preparing for Mother’s Day Classic

The Mother’s Day Classic returns to Horsham on Sunday, May 10, once again giving Wimmera people a chance to celebrate their mums, while raising money for breast and ovarian cancer research.

The event will begin at Horsham Soundshell, with registrations opening at 7.30am before an opening ceremony at 8.30am, with the walk or run starting at 9am.

Founded by Women in Super in 1998, the Mother’s Day Classic has grown from 3000 participants in Melbourne and Sydney to a national movement, with up to 100,000 people expected across more than 90 locations this year.

In 29 years, there has been 1.8-million participants who have raised $50.8-million for breast and ovarian cancer research. Investment in research has helped lift Australia’s five-year relative survival rate for breast cancer from 84 per cent to 92 per cent – but the work continues, with 61 women diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer and 12 deaths every day in Australia.

Organiser Jackie Exell said this year’s event would have a key focus on fundraising.

“This year we’ve taken on community feedback and decided to scale things back and focus on  what the Mother’s Day Classic is all about – fundraising that goes directly towards research,” she said.

Runners and walkers can grab a pre or post-event coffee from Caz and her Caffè de Kerb coffee van, and the Rotary Club of Horsham East will be on site with a free sausage sizzle, with all fundraising supporting breast and ovarian cancer research.

The Horsham Mother’s Day Classic has also launched an online raffle with prizes worth more than $2500.
