Program tackling drugs and alcohol

Families and primary school students will have the opportunity to seek information and help about drug and alcohol use at a free interactive event in Ararat on Monday.

The Ararat Local Drug Action Team is hosting a Talking Tactics Together education program at Alexandra Oval from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.

The program aims to increase grade five and six students and parent understanding about drugs and related issues, improve communication, build positive role modelling and student resilience.

The Alcohol and Drug Foundation manages and funds the Ararat Local Drug Action Team, supporting the delivery of activities to inform people, especially ‘at  risk young people’, about harm, prevention and minimisation of alcohol and other drug use.

The Ararat team is a partnership between Grampians Community Health, Victoria Police, Ararat Rural City Council, the Department of Education and Local Learning Employment Network.

Grampians Community Health chief executive Greg Little said the service provider was proud to be involved in a program helping the community. He said it was a great opportunity for community members to ‘learn more about prevention and reduce alcohol and other drug-related harms’ in their municipality.

The event will also include free pizza for attendees.

People can call Grampians Community Health on 5358 7400 for services and support, or the Alcohol and Drug Foundation on 1300 858 584 for confidential, non-judgemental information and referral services.
