Red Shield collectors to appeal

Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal volunteers will collect donations at locations across Ararat Rural City on the weekend of May 30 and 31, as well as Saturday, June 6.

Authorised Red Shield Appeal collectors will be at the intersection of Vincent and High streets in Ararat, with doorknockers set to visit residential homes on both weekends.

Ararat Mayor Bob Sanders encouraged drivers to take extra care, slow down near intersections where collections were occurring and remain attentive to road conditions.

Cr Sanders said the Red Shield Appeal had a long history of community support in Ararat and across regional Victoria.

“People in Ararat Rural City look out for one another, and the Red Shield Appeal is one of the ways we can lend a hand to those doing it tough,” he said.

“If you are able to give, even a small amount, you can be confident it will go towards practical help for families and individuals who need it in our community and beyond.

“Over these two collection weekends we are simply asking residents to keep an eye out for the collectors, drive safely around them, and consider making a donation if that is something you can manage this year.”

The Red Shield Appeal is an annual fundraising campaign that supports initiatives such as emergency relief, housing and homelessness support, family and domestic violence services, youth programs and financial counselling across Australia.

Money raised helps the Salvation Army provide food, material aid, casework support and community programs for people experiencing hardship, disadvantage and social isolation.

Residents who are unsure about a collector’s identity can check for an official Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal identification before donating. Collectors are also required to carry an Ararat Rural City permit.
