Horsham state-level volleyball players are concentrating on remaining fit while waiting to see what the future has in store for this year’s competition.

Nathan Berry and Jack Hannan are among Phantoms players keen to resume a promising Victorian Volleyball League season.

Volleyball, like all sports, is in limbo due to a statewide COVID-19 lockdown – which finished today – and is awaiting further direction from government and league leaders.

Berry said volleyballers had been doing their best to keep active at home during the lockdown.

“It’s really hard on everyone when we can’t do what we normally do,” he said.

“It makes it hard to keep up with fitness.

“I’m sure me and the rest of the team, individually we’re trying to keep moving and keep physically active.”

Hannan said he was keen to resume the season.

“We’re about halfway through,” he said.

“We’re in a holding pattern because most of the teams are Melbourne-based.

“We’re waiting for all of that to clear up so we can actually travel and get them to come to us, so we can finish off our season.

“We’ve only got six games left.

“The season has already been pushed pretty far, so I’m not sure what’s going to happen. We’ll just have to see how it plays out.”

Berry said the club’s premier men were enjoying a promising season, despite pandemic-
related interruptions.

“We’ve had four wins and three losses, which is better than other years,” he said.

“It’s not the best team but it’s definitely up there with the best premier men’s team that we’ve had.

“The younger blokes in the team are really, really stepping up, which is always good to see. They’re keen. Whenever we can train as a team, they are always there.”

Hannan said Phantoms Volleyball Club players primarily hailed from Bendigo, Mildura and Horsham.

“We have a couple from Melbourne who are coming up every week to play,” he said.

“They’re from Bendigo originally but they’ve moved away for uni.”
