Weidemann cricketers continue to shine

Rupanyup’s Connor Weidemann continues to play a major role in Waves fortunes in Cricket Victoria’s under-16 male Youth Premier League, this time with the ball.

Weidemann, who has also won selection in a Melbourne Cricket Club under-17 Dowling Shield team, captured 4-15 as the Waves clinched victory over Suns at Horsham City Oval.

The Waves, made up of players from across western Victoria, appeared in trouble on Sunday after making only 107.

But early breakthroughs put the visiting Suns on the back foot and with the game inching towards conclusion, another Wimmera player, Joey Nagorcka, of Horsham, snared the final wicket to give the Waves a five-run win. It was the Waves’ second narrow victory after the team beat Highlanders in a season opener at Ballarat with Weidemann making 48.

The Waves will now play Falcons at Hamilton on Sunday.

Weidemann, 15, who bats left-handed and is a right-arm bowler, has been undergoing specialist batting coaching with his older brother Lachlan, 17, at Melbourne Cricket Club.

Connor will play in the Dowling Shield competition in a specialist batting role with Melbourne in the under-17 competition early next year.

The Weidemanns’ sister Adele, 14, also represents the Waves in the Youth Premier League’s under-15 competition and their youngest brother Hugh, 12, has made a state under-12 team.

The all-rounder, who considers himself primarily a batsman and lists national wicket-keepers Alex Carey and Josh Philippe as his favourite players, won selection for his left-arm bowling. Homers’ Luke Miller of Horsham was also part of a final training camp for the under-12 team, an honorary line-up this year because of COVID-19 restrictions.
