Western Highway closed following serious collision at Dadswells Bridge

UPDATE, 2.10pm

 

Victoria Police has confirmed two female drivers died at the scene, with a male passenger of one of the vehicles to be airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Major Collision Unit detectives are investigating.

Police have reported a semi-trailer crashed into the rear of a car turning into a rest stop on the highway about 12.20pm.

The car was pushed into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with another vehicle.

The uninjured male truck driver was arrested and is assisting police with inquiries.

Police expect the Western Highway to be closed for most of today while detectives examine the crash scene.

The Western Highway is closed in both directions through Dadswells Bridge, between Horsham and Stawell, due to a serious collision.

Ambulance Victoria has reported a male patient is expected to be airlifted to hospital.

Early media reports are stating fatalities, however The Weekly Advertiser is waiting for confirmation from Victoria Police before releasing details.

At least one car and a truck were involved in the crash, which occurred about 12.20pm.

Department of Transport leaders have suggested motorists detour using the Henty Highway, Wimmera Highway, Murtoa-Glenorchy Road and Stawell-Warracknabeal Road.

This detour will add about 25 kilometres and more than 15 minutes to the journey.

Victoria Police is controlling the road closure.

The highway will reopen when investigations are complete and police believe it is safe to do so.
