Horsham Rural City Council will use a $7222 grant from the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund to upgrade the synthetic wicket at Dudley Cornell Park’s second oval.

The project will replace an existing narrow and deteriorated wicket and concrete base with a new synthetic playing surface built to current standards.

Mayor Brian Klowss said the new 28m-by-2.8m pitch would create a safer, more consistent and fit-for-purpose facility for junior, senior and community cricket.

“The existing synthetic wicket at Dudley Cornell oval two is narrow and in poor condition, which limits the quality of play and ability to schedule matches and training,” he said.

“Renewing the wicket will deliver a widened, appropriately lined playing surface that meets modern standards and provides a consistent and safe environment for participants.”

With Dudley Cornell oval two hosting junior cricket and Woolworths Cricket Blast programs, Cr Klowss said it played an important role in introducing young people to the game.

He said the improved surface would enhance the experience of young cricketers and increase the oval’s capacity to host matches, training and major events.

“This upgrade will significantly improve the experience for young players and help the Colts Cricket Club continue to grow its junior programs,” he said.

“It will also provide greater flexibility for competition scheduling and an additional reliable synthetic wicket during key events like junior country week, particularly when wet weather impacts turf pitches.”

The council will co-fund the project with a contribution of $8496 and manage the works.
