Ben Hobbs drafted by Essendon at pick 13

Horsham dynamo Ben Hobbs has been drafted by Essendon in last night's AFL draft.

Premiership hero Hobbs was selected by the Bombers at pick 13.

Hobbs won a Wimmera Football League premiership with Horsham Demons as a 15-year-old in 2018.

He was awarded the best player under 21 in the game.

He told AFL Media it was an amazing feeling to have his name called out by the Bombers.

"It's an amazing feeling having my name called out by the Bombers," he said.

"It is an amazing club and I can't wait to get into it.

"It's been a dream of mine since I can remember, the best day of my life."

"Dad's an Essendon supporter so it's worked perfectly."

Hobbs' draft hope was nearly derailed this year when he sustained an ankle injury and he missed eight weeks.

He finished the season averaging 28.5 disposals, 5.8 clearances and 5.5 tackles from his four full NAB League games.

A natural ball-winner, Hobbs is a competitive beast who tackles with intent and drifts forward to kick goals.

Essendon recruiting manager Adrian Dodoro told the Essendon website Hobbs was the perfect fit for the Bombers.

"We had Ben in the top seven and didn't expect him to be available at our pick, so we're very surprised but delighted," Dodoro said.

"He fits the type of player senior coach Ben Rutten wants - hardworking, committed, and has a big tank. He's a ready-made player."
